Online Master’s Degrees in Oregon

The Oregon State Board of Higher Education oversees the Oregon University System, which includes the state’s seven public universities. The state’s higher education system also includes 17 community colleges and various private and technical institutions. As part of the state’s 40-40-20 plan – which aims to have 40% of Oregon adults holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, 40% with an associate degree or certificate, and the remaining 20% to hold a high school diploma or GED by 2025 – Oregon has undertaken the Educator Preparation Initiative to keep performance high among teachers and the Quality Collaboratives Initiative to improve the overall quality of education, among other initiatives. Several of the schools in the state offer online master’s degree programs, allowing students to further their careers without the inconvenience of on-campus classes.

Oregon State University

Oregon State University has five master’s programs available online: a Master of Education, a Master of Science in Science and Mathematics Education, a Master of Natural Resources, a Master of Science in Radiation Health Physics, and a Professional Science Master’s in Fisheries and Wildlife Administration. Through the OSU Extended Campus, students can access courses at all hours of the day online while still earning an accredited degree taught by OSU faculty. Oregon State University has top-tier programs in microbiology, nuclear engineering, ecology, forestry, public health, biochemistry, and more. It is one of only two institutions to be not only a land-grant university, but also a sea-, space-, and sun-grant institution as well.

Portland State University

Portland State University offers online master’s programs in subjects including business administration, curriculum and instruction, and systems engineering. Requirements vary from program to program, but all involve coursework and interaction online through the school’s online course management system. Portland State University, an urban university, is the only one in the state to be located in a major metropolitan city and is known for promoting a sustainable lifestyle. The Princeton Review has ranked the school as one of the best in the West, and the school’s business programs consistently rank among the nation’s best.

University of Oregon

The University of Oregon sets a high standard for academics and offers one fully online master’s program. It is a Master of Science in Applied Information Management, which takes two and a half or three years to complete if you go to school part time. Courses are offered through Blackboard Learn, can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and include regular assignments and discussions with deadlines. The University of Oregon is one of 62 institutions in the notable Association of American Universities and is one of 108 universities that have received the designation of having very high research activity according to the Carnegie Foundation.

Southern Oregon University

Southern Oregon University offers three master’s degrees online: Master in Education, Master of Arts in Teaching – Special Education, and a Master in Theatre Education. Coursework can be accessed at any time of day and from anywhere, but courses have start and end dates so you can’t work at your own pace. The online course management system is Moodle. Southern Oregon University is a public liberal arts college and a member of the Council of Liberal Arts Colleges. It has been ranked in the top 100 best regional universities in the West by U.S. News & World Report.
