Online Master’s Degrees in Pennsylvania

Home to over 100 degree-granting institutions, Pennsylvania is one of the major hubs in the country for higher education. The state’s public university system, the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, includes four institutions: Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), Temple University, University of Pittsburg, and Lincoln University. The separate Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education consists of 14 state-funded schools. The private University of Pennsylvania is considered to be the first university established in the United States. Many of Pennsylvania’s public and private schools, as well as community colleges and technical schools, offer graduate courses and master’s degree programs entirely online.

Pennsylvania State University

Pennsylvania State University’s Penn State World Campus offers no fewer than 24 master’s degree programs in engineering management, finance, health administration, business (including an online MBA), and several other subjects. Penn State first made courses available online back in 1998 when distance learning was still a relatively new concept. The accredited courses and degrees Penn State World Campus offers are the same as those offered on-campus.

Drexel University

Drexel University, a private, not-for-profit institution, began offering online courses in 1996. The university’s College of Nursing and Health Professionals was one of the first in the nation to offer its degree programs online. Drexel now offers 46 master’s degrees online, including an online MBA, as well as degrees in the areas of education, engineering, and information science systems. Drexel University’s accredited online degree programs are no different than those offered on-campus.

Philadelphia University

Philadelphia University, another private, not-for-profit institution, offers three very different master’s degrees completely online: disaster medicine and management, midwifery completion, and sustainable design. The courses utilize multi-media technology to present course material in a dynamic, engaging way and to facilitate communication between students and professors. With all of its online degree programs, PhilaU Online seeks to use internet-based tools and technology to connect and integrate both traditional and new disciplines.

West Chester University

The four-year, public West Chester University offers an online MBA as well as a master’s in education in special education. The high quality MBA course curriculum is fully accredited by AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International, a leading accrediting body for business schools, and provides students with a comprehensive business education as competitive as any other on-campus program. Tuition and fees for West Chester’s MBA program are among the lowest in the Philadelphia area.
