Online Master’s Degrees in South Dakota

The largely rural state of South Dakota offers a number of distance and online learning options for undergrad, graduate, and continuing education students. Technically savvy, forward-thinking institutions, including the public Dakota State University and the for-profit National American University, have offered South Dakota residents online education resources and degrees going back to the mid-1990s. Among the six public universities in South Dakota, along with several private not-for-profit and some for-profit institutions, several offer online master’s degrees.

South Dakota State University

South Dakota State University is a public land-grant university and sun-grant college and the largest higher education institution in the state. The university boasts an enrollment of well over 12,000 students, including several international students from countries around the world. Through its Office of Continuing and Extended Education, the university offers several undergraduate programs online, and a total of 11 different master’s degrees in the areas of chemistry, education, dietetics, human sciences, journalism, nursing, and rural sociology.

University of South Dakota

The University of South Dakota (USD) is the oldest and only public liberal arts university in the state. USD currently offers 11 different master’s degrees in subjects including science in administration, speech-language pathology, educational administration, and addiction studies. The university offers two different master’s of business administration (MBA) degrees, one general, and one in specializing in health services administration.

National American University

The private, for-profit National American University (NAU) first opened its doors in 1941. It has since grown to become a regionally accredited institution with several campuses across the central United States. Degree programs are offered in traditional, online, and hybrid formats. NAU currently offers three online master’s degrees: an MBA, master’s of management, and Master of Science in Nursing.

Dakota State University

Founded in 1881, the public Dakota State University (DSU) is one of the more technologically advanced institutions in the country, and it offers undergrad and graduate programs in computer and information science, business, education, natural sciences, liberal arts, and other subjects. The university uses cutting edge technology, including tablet computers and laptops, for its on-campus and distance learning programs. DSU offers four different online master’s degrees: a Master of Science in Information Assurance, a Master of Science in Information Systems, a Master of Science in Educational Technology, and a Master of Science in Health Informatics.
