Online Master’s Degrees in Tennessee

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission oversees the state’s two public university systems, the University of Tennessee system and the Tennessee Board of Regents. Several of the public and private colleges and universities located throughout the state offer online courses and degrees. The Tennessee Distance Learning Association promotes and provides support for distance learning for Tennessee residents while the Regents Online Campus Collaborative brings together (at last count) the resources and curriculum of six universities, 13 community colleges, and 27 technology centers to offer a broad spectrum of online undergrad and graduate degrees.

The University of Tennessee

Founded in 1794, the University of Tennessee, also known as the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, UT Knoxville, UT, or UTK, consists of nine undergraduate colleges and 11 graduate colleges. It is a land-grant and sun-grant university, with students enrolling each year from all 50 states and over 100 countries. UT offers over 40 online degree and certificate programs, including 30 online master’s degrees in the areas of business administration (five different MBAs are offered), agriculture, education, engineering, nursing, and information sciences.

Tennessee State University

For over a decade, Tennessee State University (TSU), the only state-funded historically black university in Tennessee, has been consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report‘s “Guide to America’s Best Colleges.” It maintains the highest graduation rate in the Tennessee Board of Regents system. Founded in 1912, TSU was given university land-grant status in 1958. TSU offers several online and hybrid credit granting classes and a total of seven online master’s degrees in areas including holistic nursing, speech and hearing science, advanced studies in teaching and learning, professional studies, and nursing.

The University of Memphis

The University of Memphis enrolls approximately 21,000 students and awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. It has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university. Online master’s degrees from U of M’s university college in professional studies in human resources leadership, strategic leadership, and training and development are available through the Regents Online Campus Collaborative. All online programs are accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

East Tennessee State University

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) was founded in 1911 as East Tennessee State Normal School. It has been recognized by The Princeton Review as one of America’s Best Value Colleges. ETSU offers both asynchronous and synchronous online courses, including six completely online master’s degrees and other hybrid master’s degrees involving on-campus classes. The master’s degrees currently offered by ETSU include degrees in public health, professional studies, nursing, allied health, advanced studies in teaching and learning, and educational leadership.
