Online Master’s Degrees in West Virginia

The beautiful state of West Virginia has 11 public colleges and universities and 10 community and technical colleges. The largest of the public institutions include West Virginia University, Fairmont University, and Marshall University and each offer online courses and degrees. The West Virginia Virtual Learning Network (WVVLN) provides information about and access to online education programs offered by West Virginia’s state colleges and universities and community and technical colleges. Online master’s degree programs are offered by many of West Virginia’s private not-for-profit and for-profit institutions as well.

West Virginia University

West Virginia University (WVU) is a public land-grant institution. WVU consists of 15 colleges and offers 193 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees, including 10 online master’s degrees in areas such as elementary education, legal studies, and software engineering. Through outreach and its online education initiatives, WVU seeks to improve the lives of West Virginia’s residents. WVU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Wheeling Jesuit University

The private, co-educational, not-for-profit Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU) offers a curriculum and teaching philosophy founded in the hundreds year old Jesuit educational tradition. WJU is ranked as one of the best master’s universities in the south by U.S. News and World Report. WJU offers an online master’s degree in education leadership and three different bachelor’s of science to master’s of science nursing degree programs. However, on-site clinical hours are required for all of the online nursing degrees.

Mountain State University

The private, not-for-profit Mountain State University was named one of the best higher education institutions in the Southeast by The Princeton Review and a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. Through a system of branch campuses, distance learning, and nontraditional credit options, MSU now serves thousands of students across the country and around the world. The university offers several online undergraduate degrees, but only two online master’s degrees, a master of arts in psychology and master of science in strategic leadership. Online courses take place in eight-week sessions though the popular online learning platform Blackboard.

Salem International University

Founded by the Seventh Day Baptist Church in 1888, Salem International University (SIU) is a private, for-profit institution located in Salem with an enrollment of just over 800 students. SIU offers three different online master’s of business administration degrees, including a traditional MBA, another focused on health care management, and a third on international business. The university’s online programs are designed so that students can schedule their online coursework around their professional and personal obligations. SIU is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
