Online Master’s Degrees in Wyoming

Wyoming’s higher education system is small, reflecting the state’s relatively low population. Wyoming is home to just one public four-year institution, the University of Wyoming and one private four-year institution, Wyoming Catholic College. There are seven community colleges in the state offering associate’s degrees and certificates, one tribal college (Wind River Tribal College), and the for-profit University of Phoenix has a campus location in Cheyenne. At one time, Wyoming was home to several unaccredited institutions or “diploma mills,” but in 2006 a state law was passed that required unaccredited institutions to either close down or apply for accreditation. Currently, outside of the University of Wyoming, Wyoming residents then have only a handful of choices for online degree programs.

University of Wyoming

Established in 1886, the nationally recognized University of Wyoming (UW) serves 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and more than 90 countries. It is among the top universities ranked by U.S. News & World Report and Forbes magazine. UW was the first university west of Missouri to offer correspondence courses, and it continues its state-wide and national outreach through distance learning and online degree programs. UW offers four online master’s degrees, including an executive MBA, a Master of Science Nurse Educator program, and two master of arts degrees in education, one specializing in adult and post-secondary education, the other in instructional technology.

University of Phoenix

The for-profit and accredited University of Phoenix (UOP) has a campus location in Cheyenne. UOP offers several online master’s degrees in a variety areas including business, education, nursing and health care, psychology, and technology. Online students can access the Cheyenne campus Student Resource Center for technical support, tutoring, and socializing. Potential students should take care to determine the final cost of their degree program, the amount of time needed to complete it, and the value of the degree on the current job market.
